How to Dye Easter Eggs in Beautiful Vivid Colors

Coloring Easter eggs in a variety of vivid colors is a beloved spring tradition. This activity is even more beautiful when generations of family members come together to share this special Easter event. Every year my family looks forward to dyeing Easter eggs together. We use one of two different egg dyeing methods to achieve gorgeous results. The first is a classic Easter egg dyeing kit with colored tablets. However, the number and color of tablets included in each kit vary. I prefer a more traditional egg dyeing method that allows more control over the variety and intensity of colors achieved. Today I’m sharing with you how to dye Easter eggs in beautiful vibrant colors with basic liquid food coloring.

How to Dye Easter Eggs | Ingredients for Dyeing Eggs

• 1 cup boiling water (per color)
• 1 teaspoon white vinegar (per color)
• 4 boxes of liquid food coloring (see color chart below)
• 2 flats of hard boiled eggs (per child)

How to Dye Easter Eggs | Directions for Dyeing Eggs

Each color will need its own cup, bowl or jar with hot water and vinegar. When dyeing eggs use containers that are deep enough to completely cover the whole egg in the liquid dye. To dye large batches of eggs all at once use several mixing bowls. Quadruple the recipe for each color, as needed. It’s best to use containers that are stain resistant. Place eggs in the dye. For light-colored eggs leave eggs submerged for about 6 minutes. To achieve deeper more vivid hues allow the eggs to sit in the dye for 12 minutes or longer.

EASTER EGG DYEING GUIDE | BASIC FOOD COLORS: RED, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE

BASIC EASTER EGG COLORING RECIPE: 1/2 cup boiling water + 1 teaspoon white vinegar + drops of food coloring as indicated below. Completely submerge Easter eggs in the food dye for 5 minutes (or longer for deeper shades of color).

• BRILLIANT RED: 20 red
• WATERMELON: 24 red + 2 blue
• DUSKY PINK: 14 red + 6 blue
• FUCHSIA PINK: 2 blue + 18 red
• CRANBERRY: 6 blue + 14 red
• POPPY ORANGE: 2 red + 17 yellow
• SUNSET ORANGE: 3 red + 17 yellow
• BASIC YELLOW: 20 drops yellow
• GOLDEN YELLOW: 2 red + 24 yellow
• GLOWING YELLOW: 1 red + 45 yellow
• BRILLIANT GREEN: 20 green
• JUNGLE GREEN: 6 yellow + 14 green
• MINT GREEN: 6 yellow + 14 green
• TEAL GREEN: 5 blue + 15 green
• JADE GREEN: 3 blue + 17 green
• SPEARMINT: 2 blue + 6 yellow + 12 green
• HEMLOCK GREEN: 3 blue + 6 yellow + 12 green
• MIDNIGHT BLUE: 20 blue
• PLACID BLUE: 4 blue
• DARK PURPLE: 4 red + 17 blue
• PRETTY PURPLE: 5 red + 15 blue
• LIGHT VIOLET: 2 red + 20 blue
• PLUM: 4 blue + 10 red

USE THE BASIC EASTER EGG DYEING RECIPE PLUS DROPS OF COLOR AS INDICATED BELOW:

• NEON GREEN: 10 green
• GREEN APPLE: 20 green + 2 blue
• TURQUOISE: 2 green + 5 blue
• NEON BLUE: 10 blue
• SKY BLUE: 2 green + 9 blue
• STORMY BLUE: 2 green + 1 purple + 9 blue
• DAZZLING BLUE: 1 purple + 20 blue
• RADIANT ORCHID: 3 purple + 7 regular blue (standard food coloring blue, not neon blue)
• NEON PURPLE: 25 purple
• DEEP PURPLE: 3 pink + 7 blue
• NEON PINK: 10 pink
• LILAC: 2 blue + 6 pink
• RASPBERRY: 1 blue + 6 pink
