🎄Why We Love Christmas Hot Chocolate Bombs

Holiday hot cocoa bombs are the perfect treat for kids and adults. Featuring hot cocoa mix, marshmallow bits, and crushed candy canes enclosed in a white chocolate sphere, they’re ideal for making Christmas hot chocolate.

  • Super Festive: The snowman hot chocolate bomb design is super cute, as are the Christmas light and truffle balls. Decorated in holiday colors, they make the holiday season merry and bright. Serve them at Christmas parties and on Christmas eve.
  • Easy to Make: This is a fun no-fail recipe for both teens and adults, as long as the instructions are followed. To get younger kiddos involved, you can have them in charge of mixing the hot cocoa mix and/or spooning it into the chocolate spheres.
  • Perfect for Gifting: Christmas hot chocolate bombs are ideal gifts for friends, neighbors, co-workers and teachers. Place them in paper candy cups, then add them to cellophane bags. Tie them closed with ribbons. If desired, pair the balls with a holiday mug.
  • Best Christmas Hot Chocolate: When craving a special decadent drink for dessert, these treats make the best-tasting luxury beverage. Rich and creamy, perfectly sweet, they deliver a delicious satisfying mouthfeel. They increase holiday feelings of comfort and joy.
  • Easy to Pack and Transport: For trips to the cabin, to enjoy at the ski lodge, and for holiday camping. Enjoy them around the camp fire.

🛒 Ingredients

For the Hot Cocoa Mix

I use this simple recipe 👉🏻 for hot chocolate mix because it’s so darn good. Below are the 6 ingredients you’ll need. But if desired, you can use instant cocoa mix instead, plus your favorite add-ins like Christmas sprinkles.

  • Powdered Sugar: Perfectly sweetens the cocoa powder mixture.
  • Dried Whole Milk: Adds luscious creaminess and rich flavor.
  • Dutch-Process Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Adds a deep chocolaty flavor for the most delicious Christmas hot chocolate.
  • Fine Sea Salt: Enhances the flavor of chocolate.
  • Ghirardelli Chocolate Bar: Or another premium chocolate baking bar.
  • Vanilla Powder: Adds a subtle taste of vanilla. But you if you love the taste of malted milk, you can use Nestle Carnation malted milk powder instead, in either original or chocolate.
  • Christmas Sprinkles (optional): For an extra touch of holiday fun.

For the Hot Chocolate Bombs

Silicone Cocoa Bomb Molds: This is a must-have item for making hot chocolate bombs. I recommend 2 sets so you can double this recipe for gift giving and save time by prepping all of the balls at once.

  • Mini Marshmallow Bits: These tiny dehydrated marshmallows are perfect for hot chocolate balls. But you can also use Jet-Puffed bits.
  • Candy Canes: Crushed candy canes add a hint of peppermint and sweetness to the Christmas hot chocolate bombs. Make sure to crush them very well so they can dissolve into the warm cocoa.
  • White Chocolate Candy Coating: This is the key to smooth, shiny hot cocoa bombs. It’s often called “chocolate bark” or “chocolate almond bark”. At the market, find it in the baking aisle by the chocolate chips. (The brand I use is “Good & Gather” from Target, their in-store brand.) This recipe will not work with plain melted white chocolate chips.

For Decorating Christmas Hot Chocolate Bombs

It’s always a good idea to have an extra package of white chocolate candy coating on hand for decorating. You may not need it, but if you do it’s great to be prepared so there’s no running to the store in the rain or snow.

📖 Recipe Steps

For the Hot Cocoa Mix

  1. Add all 6 ingredients for the cocoa mix to a medium bowl: powdered sugar, dried whole milk, cocoa powder, fine sea salt, finely-chopped chocolate, and vanilla powder. Mix well.
  2. Add the marshmallow bits and crushed candy canes to the bowl. Mix to incorporate. Set the hot cocoa mix aside until needed.

For the Hot Chocolate Bombs

RECIPE PREP: Melt white chocolate candy coating according to package directions. (Here’s how I do it: Break it into large pieces. Microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and melted.)

  1. Pour 3 tablespoons melted white chocolate into each well of two 6-hole silicone molds. Use a spoon or pastry brush to spread out the chocolate to create a thick, sturdy layer on all sides. Make sure to spread the chocolate all the way to the top of each well so the spheres won’t have brittle edges. Transfer molds to the fridge until completely set – about 10 minutes. Don’t discard any leftover chocolate – we’re going to use it later to decorate the hot chocolate bombs.
  2. Once the chocolate has set, slip on a pair of food prep gloves to prevent fingerprints. Remove the chocolate cups from the molds. Place them on a lined baking tray for stability. Add 3 tablespoons hot cocoa mix to half the chocolate cups. Leave the other half empty.
  3. Heat a small nonstick skillet over medium heat until just warm. Remove pan from heat. Place one empty chocolate bowl rim down on the skillet. Let it sit for 1 to 2 seconds, just until the rim begins to melt.
  4. Place the chocolate bowl with melty edges on top of a filled cup. Gently press them together to seal. Repeat this process with the remaining hot chocolate bombs. There will be 6 in total.
