Halloween Brownies

These homemade Halloween brownies are like trick-or-treat in pan. Rich and chewy, they’re topped with festive Halloween candies. Like candy corn, chocolate squares, M&Ms and spooky candy eyes. A special Halloween treat!
To make spooky Halloween brownies I use Wilton candy eyeballs in two different sizes. I start by adding the eyeballs first, before adding the other candies so they can be perfectly positioned in the layout.
For the other Halloween candies, select sweets with a taste and texture that pairs well with chewy brownies. For example, we wouldn’t include lemon drops in this recipe, as the lemony flavor and hard texture would not be a pairing for brownies. Chocolaty candies work well.
This Halloween dessert is ideal for a wide variety of festive occasions, to include Halloween parties, potlucks, school events, bake sales, and fall movie nights. It’s also a great way to use up leftover Halloween candy.
🛒 Ingredients
- Salted Butter: We use all butter, no oil, for a rich buttery taste.
- Granulated Sugar: Adds the perfect amount of sweetness.
- Pure Vanilla Extract: Enhances the flavor of the other ingredients, and provides a delicious bakery aroma.
- Large Eggs: Provide rich moisture and structure.
- Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa: For a deep chocolaty taste. It also gives the brownies the dark color of Oreos which makes them look Halloween perfect.
- Baking Powder: A leavening ingredient for the perfect rise.
- Kosher Salt: Balances the flavor of the other ingredients.
- All-Purpose Flour: Provides strength and structure. When combined with liquid it develops an elastic gluten network that holds the other ingredients together.
- Nestle Toll House Dark Chocolate Morsels: It makes these brownies super chocolaty and irresistible. But if you don’t have them on hand, you can leave them out.
📖 Recipe Steps
RECIPE PREP: Preheat oven to 350°F. Generously grease a square 8 X 8-inch metal baking pan with butter. Then line the bottom of the pan with a square of parchment paper. Grease the parchment paper as well.
- STEP 1: In a medium batter bowl, mix together melted butter, granulated sugar and vanilla with a rubber spatula. Add in the eggs. Stir well to combine.
- STEP 2: Add in dark cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir well to combine. Add in the flour and mix until fully incorporated. Your brownie batter should be smooth, but it’s fine to have a few small lumps.
- STEP 3: Transfer brownie batter to the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, or until the edges are set and the middle no longer jiggles but is slightly under-baked. Do not overcook.
- STEP 4: Immediately decorate the Halloween brownies as soon as they come out of the oven. Gently press a variety of Halloween candies into the top. They should be scattered about and crazy looking.
- STEP 5: Place the brownie pan on a cooling rack. Let the brownies cool and set completely, about 2 to 3 hours.
👩🏻🍳 Recipe FAQ
These are the most commonly-asked questions for making the BEST Halloween brownies, and the most helpful answers for recipe success.
Reach for a square metal pan not a glass one. Grease the pan with butter, then add 2 tablespoons granulated sugar to the pan. Shake and turn the pan until it’s well coated, then pour out and discard the excess sugar. This coating will help give your brownies square crispy edges.
Start the cooling process by placing the brownie pan on a metal rack. After 30 to 45 minutes, speed up the cooling process by transferring the pan of brownies to the fridge or the freezer until fully cooled.
Place a thin cutting board or small baking sheet on top of the pan. Flip the pan over, and gently lift the brownie pan straight up to remove it. Peel off the parchment paper and discard it. Use another board or baking sheet to flip the brownies over again so they’re right-side-up.
After the brownies have cooled completely, run a sharp chef’s knife (not a serrated knife) under hot water, then dry it completely. Slice down into the brownie in an even motion, then lift the knife up. Wipe the knife clean after each cut. Do not saw back and forth or drag the blade.
Wrap the brownies in plastic wrap, or put them into a zip-top bag using parchment paper between the layers so the brownies don’t stick together. Store at room temperature for up to 4 days. Or freeze the brownies in an airtight container for up to 1 month.
