Our Halloween Muddy Buddies are a fun Halloween Chex mix also known as puppy chow! This spooktacular snack is ideal for scary movie nights and Halloween parties. You can make these Halloween nibbles two ways: as all-white Muddy buddies with creepy eye balls, or a tuxedo 50/50 snack mix with grated chocolate and snapped pieces of Oreo cookies.
🛒 Ingredients
Planning a Halloween party is easy when you have an arsenal of quick-to-make recipes that are time-tested favorites. This Chex mix is one of those essential recipes! It’s made with simple ingredients and pantry staples.
- Rice Chex or Corn Chex cereal
- Dark chocolate morsels
- Smooth peanut butter
- Butter
- Vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar (confectioner’s sugar)
- Edible candy eyeballs
🥣 Optional Add-Ins
- Finely-grated baking chocolate
- Oreos: Regular Oreos or Halloween Oreos (with orange-colored centers)
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tip – How to Grate Chocolate
- The best way to grate chocolate is with a microplane zester/grater. Place both the unwrapped baking chocolate and microplane in the freezer for 15 minutes. The chocolate will be less melty and easier to handle.
- If you only have access to a box grater, use the smallest holes. A serrated knife will also work, but the grating process will be messy.
- To save time, buy a pouch of finely-grated American Heritage Chocolate online. It’s the product I’m using here for this recipe.
📖 Recipe Steps
With this puppy chow recipe, making a batch of spooky snack mix is super easy and delightfully sinister. Here’s how to make a bowl of these creepy treats for hair-rising fun!
- STEP 1: Measure out the cereal. Add it to a large wide bowl. Set it aside.
- STEP 2: Add butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir well. Microwave for 30 to 60 seconds more, or until the mixture can be stirred smooth.
- STEP 3: Drizzle vanilla over the mixture. Stir until incorporated.
- STEP 4: Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal. With a spatula, gently fold and stir it in. All pieces should be evenly coated.
👻 You Can Make Halloween Chex Mix 2 Ways
Before continuing the recipe, we have a decision to make. This black/white Halloween snack mix can be assembled 2 ways. Choose one.
- Classic Halloween Muddy Buddies: An all-white Chex mix with powdered sugar, chocolate morsels and candy eyes. It’s wickedly good!
- Tuxedo Halloween Chex Mix A more prominent black/white snack. It features half the mix with finely-grated chocolate and Oreos. Visually stunning, it’s the perfect treat to satisfy deep chocolate cravings.
📖 Finish Assembling the Recipe
- STEP 5: Divide coated cereal between two zip-top bags (gallon size).
- STEP 6: If making tuxedo snack mix, add powdered sugar to just one bag instead of two. Add finely-grated chocolate to the second bag. Gently shake the bags until all pieces are evenly coated. Over the sink, transfer coated pieces to a colander. Shake off excess powder.
- STEP 7: For the bottom layer, add half the mix to a wide serving bowl. For a tuxedo look, keep chocolate-coated pieces and powdered-sugar pieces on separate sides of the bowl. Add chopped Oreos. Sprinkle with dark chocolate morsels and candy eyeballs.
- STEP 8: Add remaining mix to the bowl. Sprinkle the top with more chocolate morsels and spooky candy eyes. For an elegant tuxedo snack mix, add chopped Oreos straight down the middle.
COLORFUL ADD-INS: Want to switch up this black-and-white treat with beautiful pops of color? Add M&Ms, candy corn, and gummy worms!
