Movie Night Party Ideas + Free Printables

Movie Night Party + Free Printables

I must confess to being a bit of an expert on Movie Night events. When I was PTA president at a large middle school our board put on a fabulous Movie Night once monthly at the school site. We sold Movie Night tickets during lunch time, shopped for concessions, set everything up, chaperoned, and cleaned up afterward. These Movie Night parties were ultra-popular because everyone loves movies. So make your next birthday party or event a Movie Night! It really is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion. It’s also a fabulous excuse to get your group of friends together to pre-game the weekend before the Oscars, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, etc. For your movie night party serve up a variety of appetizers, salads, and delicious desserts. For children’s parties juice boxes and water bottles are age-appropriate beverages. For adult parties it’s cocktails, wine and soda. And don’t forget the popcorn! Let’s make your upcoming Movie Night an event to remember.

Movie Night Party Ideas | Movie Night Decorations

Beautiful decorations are an important part of setting the scene for your Movie Night event. Get creative when setting up a movie night atmosphere. Over your food and dessert table hang up a large sign that says “Concessions.” All you’ll need to make the sign is a poster board, red and black thick Sharpie markers, and scissors to round out the corners. In a large red photo frame that’s placed on your concessions table, have a printed list of all your Movie Night “concessions” items.

Movie Night Party Ideas | Movie Night Food + Supplies

Perfect food to serve for a Movie Night are hot dogs, potato salad that’s been pre-portioned out and served in small food-service containers, and simple chip-and-cheese nachos in paper boats along with jalapeno slices. You can purchase giant cans of nacho cheese at Smart & Final, Costco or Sams Club. Two hours before your Movie Night begins, start warming the nacho cheese in a crock pot and ice down the drinks in large red tubs. Great Movie Night dessert items include cotton candy, Cracker Jack, cupcakes, or scoops of ice cream served in cute little red/white cups with wooden ice cream spoons. After prepping for Movie Night, dim the lights in your home while keeping a bright light on your “concessions” table. Right before guests arrive start popping up big batches of popcorn so the scent will trigger thoughts of being in a real movie theater!

Movie Night Party Ideas | Movie Night Concession Items to Rent or Buy

Wonderful rental items that really boost the ambiance of a Movie Night include a hot dog steamer, nacho chips warmer, nacho cheese dispenser, popcorn machine, and a cotton candy machine. If you have a theater room in your home or are throwing big Movie Night events regularly at a school or youth entertainment venue, then it’s well worth it to invest in these beautiful, authentic Movie Night items.

From my experience volunteering at concessions stands for Movie Night events at the middle school, theater nights, and during high school football games, these are the most popular candies: Junior Mints, M&Ms, Hershey Bars, red rope licorice, Starburst, Skittles, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat, and Wonka Fun Dip.

Movie Night Party Ideas | Movie Night Tickets + Raffle

Set up a small folding table outside your front door or in the foyer area of your home where guests can pick up their will-call movie tickets (use double raffle tickets for this). Have a jar set out on a table inside your home where guests can tear off a section of their “movie ticket” and put it into a jar for a drawing. A perfect prize for your Movie Night drawing is a pair of real movie tickets to a local theater.

The final consideration when planning a great Movie Night is to select movies that will appeal to your guests. I like to have a selection of five or six different movies on hand to make sure there’s at least two movies that everyone can enjoy. Planning a Movie Night event is exciting and fun! With a bit of creativity you can create a fabulous Movie Night atmosphere in your home, backyard (with a king size sheet and movie projector), or at a school or other large venue. And once you plan one successful Movie Night, it’s easy to repeat the planning and set-up process the next time around. Have a wonderful time!
