Choose one day a week, or one day a month, and make it your official date night. Put it on the calendar. Schedule it in as an important part of your life. Spice things up by varying your date-night activities. If you’re staying in, cook dinner together and make it a night of romance. If you’re single, date nights can include an evening out with friends or treating yourself to a movie. Or sign up for a local wine-and-art night event. The magical thing about volunteering is that you actually receive much more than you give. Allow yourself the luxury of reading a really great book each month. It doesn’t matter whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, just that it’s enjoyable. If there’s little time in the schedule for reading, then consider listening to an audio book. Recorded books can be enjoyed during a morning commute, while working out at the gym, while cooking in the kitchen or doing laundry. Reading not only enhances knowledge, but it also makes you a more well-rounded, interesting person.
New Year’s Resolution #8: Build Up Your Savings Account or Slice Down Debt
Start building up your savings account by putting aside a set amount each and every month. This is most easily done if the day your paycheck hits the bank you immediately move funds into your savings account. Or if you have credit card debt or student loans, make a commitment to applying additional funds every month toward paying off these debts more quickly. What’s important is that you are actively taking control of your finances.
New Year’s Resolution #9: Make Time for Yourself
Everyday life is full of job commitments, maintaining households, and fulfilling the needs of those who depend on you. But it’s important to set aside time for yourself to recharge your batteries. The happier and more fulfilled you are on a personal level, the more productive you will be at work, and the more joy you will have within to dispense to others. At least once a week carve out special time that’s just for you. Take the opportunity to unwind, relax and feed your soul.
New Year’s Resolution #10: Reconnect with Old Friends
Log onto Facebook and pull up your friends list. Focus on friends whom you’ve had a true personal connection with in the past. These may be old friends from high school, college, former roommates, neighbors, etc. Select three or four old friends that you truly miss and would really enjoy reconnecting with. Send each a brief private message to get the conversation going. Make plans to meet up for coffee, lunch or another activity. For friendships that were really strong, when you reconnect it will feel like no time has passed at all!
