Just looking at these Monster Mash Brownies, I have a special Halloween song stuck in my head: He did the mash. He did the monster mash. The monster mash. It was a graveyard smash… Hahahha! Now you’ll probably be singing this song too. It’s so darn contagious, just like the craving for these chocolatey Halloween Monster Mash Brownies!
The fabulous brownie batter is a simple traditional recipe for Hershey’s brownies. And I promise you, these delicious Halloween Monster Mash Brownies are quick and easy to make. It takes only 10 minutes to prep the pan and mix the batter, and another 20 minutes to bake in the oven. Decorating these Halloween Monster Mash Brownies is an absolute breeze, 5 minutes at most. So let’s get baking!
Here’s what you’ll need to make Halloween Monster Mash Brownies from scratch: Melted butter, granulated sugar, 2 large eggs, vanilla extract, salt, baking powder, baking cocoa, and all-purpose flour.
Start by generously greasing a square 8 X 8-inch baking pan. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a small pan melt the butter. Add the melted butter to a medium-sized mixing bowl along with the sugar and vanilla. Stir until these ingredients are fully combined.
Add the two eggs to the mixing bowl and stir well.
Add the cocoa, baking powder, salt, and flour. Mix until all ingredients have been combined.
You want the brownie batter as smooth as can be with just a few small lumps.
Transfer the brownie batter to the prepared baking pan. At this point you can already see how scrumptious these Monster Mash Brownies will be. Over the Labor Day weekend I bought my black-and-white batter bowl at Crate and Barrel. But you can find some lovely ceramic batter bowls through Amazon. My square USA baking pans came from Williams Sonoma, but you can find the exact same ones online. I love that they’re heavy-duty and have a non-stick, quick-release coating.
Halloween Monster Mash Brownies
Yield 9 Brownies
- 1 stick salted butter (8 tablespoons), melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure Mexican vanilla (or vanilla extract)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/3 cup Hershey's special dark cocoa
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- Assorted Halloween candies: M&Ms, candy corn, Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar, Reese's Miniature Cups, chocolate sprinkles, Wilton candy eyeballs
- Generously grease a square 8 X 8-inch baking pan.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a medium batter bowl, mix together the melted butter, granulated sugar and vanilla with a wooden mixing spoon or spatula. Add in the eggs and stir until combined. Add in the cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir until well mixed. Add in the flour and mix until fully incorporated. Your brownie batter should be smooth, but it's okay to have a few small lumps.
- Bake your Halloween Monster Mash Brownies for 20 minutes.
- Immediately decorate the brownies as soon as you pull them out of the oven! Gently press a variety of Halloween candies into the top of the brownies.
- Cool to room temperature. Enjoy!
