When I think of delicious homemade alfredo sauce, I recall my visit to Nice and Rome, Italy. Their restaurants served some of the best homemade pasta sauce I’ve ever tasted. The ones I’m dreaming of were creamy, rich, savory and memorable, served over artisan noodles. But you won’t find it listed on their menus under Fettuccini Alfredo, they use other names: fettuccine al burro, fettuccine burro e parmigiano, or pasta in bianco. Today I’m sharing my own homemade alfredo sauce recipe based on my remembrances of the beautiful flavor and consistency of those I enjoyed on vacation during a mother-and-daughter trip.
What you’ll love most is this is an easy, fail-safe recipe you can easily reproduce in your own kitchen. Once you taste this scrumptious goodness, I know you’ll agree – this is the best homemade alfredo sauce you’ve ever had!
These are all the ingredients you’ll need to make yummy homemade alfredo sauce. I also included a package of fettuccine noodles, but you can choose a different type of pasta to use. The cream cheese used in this recipe gives the sauce a creamy rich texture.
So put on your apron, roll up your sleeves and let’s begin! Here’s how to make homemade alfredo sauce: Start by placing the butter, heavy cream and cream cheese in a medium or large saucepan over medium heat. It’s at this time that I also start boiling salted water in a separate pot to cook the pasta. A bit of multi-tasking will get dinner on the table a lot faster! Whisk lightly until the butter has completely melted. Adjust the heat to medium/low as you continue to whisk and the cream cheese continues to melt.
When your sauce is whisked together it will look just like this. And at this point you’re halfway done making homemade alfredo sauce. Easy, peasy! Do keep an eye on your pasta pot – the water might be boiling and ready for you to add the pasta and cook it al dente.
Add in the garlic, salt and pepper.
Whisk again until combined.
Add the Parmesan cheese and Romano cheese. Whisk until the cheeses are fully incorporated into the homemade alfredo sauce.
Look at how creamy and delicious this looks!
And now the final step for making homemade alfredo sauce. Add in the chopped parsley and lightly whisk again.
Your homemade alfredo sauce is done and ready to be served with your favorite pasta. Although I used fettuccine, you can use linguine or spaghetti. After boiling the fettuccini I transferred the drained noodles directly on top of the sauce. What’s really important is to make sure all of the water has been fully drained off your cooked pasta. Unwanted drips of pasta water can easily ruin your scrumptious homemade alfredo sauce.
Once I gently mixed the noodles and sauce together, dinner was ready. I garnished my Fettuccine Alfredo with a sprinkling of chopped parsley and pieces of freshly-shaved parmesan. So delightful!
Mmmm…this Fettuccine Alfredo is so incredibly savory and satisfying. I love quick and easy recipes that look and taste like you’ve labored in a hot kitchen all afternoon to produce such a beautiful gourmet-looking dish.
From start to finish, this delicious homemade alfredo sauce with fettuccini noodles took only 15 minutes to make. This Italian specialty is perfect for a quick meal, a potluck, or a large family gathering. Just double or triple the recipe as needed. Homemade alfredo sauce can be made a day in advance and refrigerated. So convenient! Rewarm on the stovetop.

These are the helpful kitchen tools I used when making this homemade alfredo sauce recipe. My all-time favorite is my lovely Staub Universal pan. I love that this French cast-iron pan is multi-functional, has two handles and a glass lid. I have two of these – one in blue and one in grenadine. You’ll love that because of its beauty it can seamlessly go from stovetop to tabletop. It doubles as a wonderful serving piece.
