Brownie Frosting

This decadent brownie frosting is rich, luxurious and easy to make. When you spread it over brownies it makes every bite a pure indulgence.


Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick butter)
  • 1/3 cup Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, or a bit more if needed
  • 24 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch kosher salt


  1. Add the butter to a microwave-safe mixing bowl. Melt the butter in the microwave (about 30 to 45 seconds). Make sure it’s fully melted.
  2. Add powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to the bowl. Mix until fully combined (about 2 minutes). The frosting should be velvety smooth, luscious and spreadable.
  3. The final texture of the frosting is a personal preference. If the frosting is too stiff, add a bit more milk and stir until the desired consistency is achieved. If the frosting is too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar. 


Recipe tip: Because this topping sets quickly, wait until your brownies are fully cooled before preparing this brownie frosting.

How to frost brownies: With a spoon, drop dollops of frosting over the slab of brownies. With a spatula, immediately spread the frosting evenly over the surface. Once the frosting is set, the brownies are ready to be cut and served.
