- 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of kosher salt, if needed
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (optional)
For Garnishing & Serving
- Mini chocolate chips or mini M&Ms
- Flaky sea salt
- Graham crackers
Instructions
RECIPE PREP: For silky smooth hummus (optional), see the “Notes” section below for instructions on “how to make hummus smoother.”
- Add all ingredients to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse for 45 seconds or until the mixture is luscious and smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. For a slightly chunkier texture, pulse for a shorter amount of time.
- With the machine turned off, do a taste test. Add a pinch of salt if needed. If the mixture is too thick or forms a ball, add 2 tablespoons milk (dairy or non-dairy) and pulse to combine. It’s okay if the consistency of the hummus is a bit loose. As it sits out for serving or in the fridge, it will thicken as it dries out.
- Transfer the chocolate hummus to a small bowl. Garnish with flaky salt and mini chocolate chips.Serve with your favorite crunchy sweet or salty dippers, like graham crackers or pretzels.
Notes
How to make hummus smoother: By removing the skins of the garbanzo beans. For 1 (15-oz) can of beans, it takes about 10 to 12 minutes to pick off the skins with your fingertips. Or just boil the (rinsed and drained) canned beans with 1 1/2 tsp baking soda for 20 minutes until super tender. The skins will break down and soften. In a colander, rinse the beans (very well) under cool running water while rubbing the skins to release them.
How to elevate the look and flavor of chocolate hummus: With the back of a spoon, swirl some melted peanut butter across the surface before sprinkling the top with mini chocolate chips and flaky salt.
