Description

These homemade Halloween brownies are like trick-or-treat in pan. Rich and chewy, they’re topped with festive Halloween candies. Like candy corn, Hershey’s chocolate, M&Ms and spooky candy eyes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 stick salted butter (8 tablespoons), melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup Hershey’s special dark cocoa
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup Nestle Toll House dark chocolate morsels
  • Assorted Halloween candies: M&Ms, candy corn, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar, Reese’s Miniature Cups, chocolate sprinkles, Wilton candy eyeballs

Instructions

RECIPE PREP: Preheat oven to 350°F. Preheat oven to 350°F. Generously grease a square 8 X 8-inch metal baking pan with butter. Then line the bottom of the pan with a square of parchment paper. Grease the parchment paper as well.

  1. In a medium batter bowl, mix together melted butter, granulated sugar and vanilla extract with a rubber spatula. Add in the eggs. Stir well to combine.
  2. Add dark cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir well to combine. Add in flour. Mix until fully incorporated. The batter should be smooth, but it’s okay to have a few small lumps. Stir in the dark chocolate morsels.
  3. Transfer brownie batter to the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Bake for about 22 to 26 minutes, or until the edges are set and the middle no longer jiggles but is slightly under-baked. Do not overcook.
  4. Immediately decorate the brownies as soon as you pull them out of the oven. Gently press a variety of Halloween candies into the top. The more scattered and crazy looking, the better!
  5. Place the brownie pan on a cooling rack. Let brownies cool and set completely, about 2 to 3 hours.

Notes

How to properly cool brownies: Start the cooling process by placing the brownie pan on a metal rack. After 30 to 45 minutes, speed up the process by transferring the pan to the fridge or freezer until fully cooled.

How to neatly remove brownies from the pan: Place a thin cutting board or small baking sheet on top of the pan. Flip the pan over, and gently lift the brownie pan straight up to remove it. Peel off the parchment paper and discard it. Use another board or baking sheet to flip the brownies over again so they’re right-side-up.

How to cut brownies cleanly: After the brownies have cooled completely, run a sharp chef’s knife (not a serrated knife) under hot water, then dry it completely. Slice down into the brownie in an even motion, then lift the knife up. Wipe the knife clean after each cut. Do not saw back and forth or drag the blade.
