👩🏻‍🍳 Why This Recipe’s a Keeper

  • Restaurant-Quality Taste: These homemade Sausage Egg McMuffins closely replicate the flavor profile of the original McDonald’s sandwich, combining savory sausage, creamy egg, and melted cheese on a toasted English muffin.
  • Customization: You have control over the quality and quantity of ingredients used, allowing you to tailor the sandwiches to your preferences. You can adjust the seasoning of the sausage, use your favorite type of cheese, and even add extra toppings like sliced tomato or avocado.
  • Healthier Option: By making it at home, you can use leaner cuts of pork for the sausage patties, or use ground chicken or turkey instead. You can opt for whole-grain English muffins for added fiber. You can also control the amount of oil or butter used for cooking.
  • Cost-Effective: Making these sandwiches at home can be more cost-effective than purchasing them from a fast-food restaurant, especially if you’re feeding a family or making multiple servings.
  • Meal Prepping Convenience: This recipe is perfect for meal prepping ahead of time. Reheat the pre-assembled sandwiches in the microwave for 1-2 minutes (or rewarm them in the oven) for a quick and satisfying breakfast on busy mornings.
  • Satisfaction: There’s a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in being able to recreate a beloved fast-food favorite in your own kitchen. Plus, it’s a great way to start your day with a delicious homemade breakfast.

🧑🏼‍🍳 Expert Tips for Sausage Patties

  • For that unique McDonald’s taste: we use ground pork and season it as described in this recipe. But if you don’t have all the needed spices on hand, you can save money by using bulk breakfast sausage (instead of purchasing all of the individual spices). The mixture comes pre-seasoned with flavoring and spices.
  • To assemble these breakfast sandwiches faster: use premade Jimmy Dean (heat & serve) sausage patties. It’s a delicious option with really great flavor.

🛒 Ingredients

For the Sausage Patties

  • Ground Pork: The main protein component of the sausage patties.
  • Fennel Seeds: Provide a distinct flavor and aroma to the sausage patties.
  • Ground Thyme: Adds and earthy and slightly floral flavor to the patties.
  • Ground Sage: Contributes a warm, peppery flavor to the sausage.
  • Onion Powder: Adds savory depth and a hint of sweetness to the mixture.
  • Garlic Powder: Enhances the savory flavor profile.
  • Kosher Salt: Enhances the overall flavor of the mixture.
  • Ground Black Pepper: Adds heat and depth of flavor.
  • Granulated sugar or maple syrup (optional): For a bit of sweetness to balance all the savory flavors. McDonald’s uses dextrose to sweeten their sausage patties.
  • Canola Oil: Prevents the sausage patties from sticking to the skillet while cooking.

For the Cheesy Egg McMuffins

  • English Muffins: Provide the base for the breakfast sandwiches. They’re a key component of the McMuffin, offering a toasty texture and absorbent surface for the other ingredients.
  • Large Eggs: Provide protein and richness to the sandwich.
  • Cheddar Cheese: The slices melt over the bottom halves of the English muffins, adding creaminess and extra flavor.
  • Vegetable Oil or Butter: For the skillet. It’s used to cook the eggs and prevent sticking. The McDonald’s version of the Sausage Egg Mc Muffin includes salted butter. If desired, spread a pat of butter on the top half of the toasted English Muffin.
  • Water (for steaming): Helps create a controlled environment for cooking the eggs, ensuring they are tender and perfectly cooked.

📖 Recipe Steps

RECIPE PREP: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a plate with paper towels.

Prepare the Sausage Patties

  1. Add meat and spices to a medium bowl. Mix with clean hands or a fork.
  2. Form the meat into 6 sausage patties that are slightly larger than an English muffin. The sausage patties will shrink during cooking.
  3. Add canola oil to a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Swish the pan around to distribute the oil. Add 3-4 sausage patties. Cook for 2-3 minutes, then flip the patties over. Continue cooking until both sides are brown and the pork is cooked through. Transfer to a paper-towel lined plate to drain.
  4. Place the sliced muffins on a baking tray. Toast in the oven as desired. Add slices of cheese to the bottom half of each muffin. Return to the oven until the cheese melts.

Cook the Eggs

  1. Crack the eggs into ramekins. (It’s important to have the eggs cracked and ready to go so the they can be poured into the eggs rings at the same time.)
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan. Spray the egg rings with oil. Place greased rings flat against the bottom of the pan.
  3. Work quickly. Add a cracked egg into each ring. With a fork, burst the yolks so the eggs cook evenly. Drizzle a few tablespoons of water around each egg ring. Immediately cover pan with a lid. Allow the eggs to steam for about 2 minutes, or until desired doneness.

👨🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQ

This recipe calls for thinner patties similar to the McDonald’s Sausage Egg McMuffin. One pound of meat is enough for 6 of these thin sausage patties. If you prefer thicker portions, divide the meat into 4 portions.

Try pan-fried slices of Canadian bacon, or thick-sliced bacon cooked until crisp. Or instead of using pork sausage patties, use patties made with ground chicken or ground turkey.

For Sausage Egg McMuffins similar to McDonald’s (they use processed cheese), use American cheese. But for a much better flavor, use medium cheddar cheese. I buy a package of pre-sliced Tillamook cheese at Costco.

Use lean ground pork for the sausage patties. Or substitute the pork with ground chicken or turkey. Cut back on the amount of salt used in the meat mixture. Make the eggs with whites only, no yolks. Use whole-grain or whole-wheat English muffins. Don’t butter the toasted muffins.

Use a mason jar ring from a quart-sized container, or use an extra-large biscuit cutter. You can also recycle a tuna can by cutting off both ends and using the body of the can as an egg ring.

Although the sausage patties can be prepared in advance and frozen, the eggs will develop a rubbery texture in the freezer. This make-ahead recipe is best when stored in the refrigerator. Use within 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven.

Serve it with hash browns or crispy air fryer breakfast potatoes.
